We invite the world’s best knowledge on electronic structure and applied fields to take the challenge to build a world-leading conference on spectroscopy and structure.

Professor Marko Huttula, co-chair of ICESS 2021, University of Oulu

Oulu has a Finnish national coordinating role for scientific relation to MAX IV, the brightest synchrotron source in the world. Professor Marko Huttula from Nano and Molecular Systems Research Unit at the University of Oulu acts as a coordinator of the Finnish participation.

Electronic structure is the fundamental property of matter defining its behaviour and interaction with its surroundings. New demands to gain knowledge on electronic structure, and to benefit from it, are set by the golden era of nanoscaling and functional nanomaterials design.

Ranging from atoms and molecules to complex condensed matter, the ICESS conference at 2021 will bring together scientists interested in the properties electronic structure in various different scales. Specific topics for discussion will include atomic and molecular science, photochemistry, quantum materials, imaging spectroscopies, novel instrumentation, and nanomaterials.

Special focus of the conference is in highlighting the new developments and applications of the use of synchrotron radiation and Free Electron lasers around the world. Novel facilities with emerging technologies have been established producing beyond state of the art fundamental science and engaging completely new disciplinaries to use these imaging and characterization tools.

The intended program schedule has been designed from local standpoints with flexibility and participant adaptability in mind.

Science with Arctic Attitude

University of Oulu is an international research and innovation university. Close cooperation with the public sector, research centres and companies has created an internationally significant innovation hub to Oulu. The university’s location close to the Arctic offers unique conditions for a wide variety of research, which has changed the world. Every day 2.6 billion people use technology developed in Oulu.

Linnanmaa campus – venue for the ICESS-15

The spacious university campus offers good facilities for the conference. The Linnanmaa campus is located 7 kilometers north from the city centre. A shuttle bus will be organised between city centre and campus in the mornings and afternoons. Also, Public transportation runs smoothly between the university and the city centre, where hotels and social event venues are located. When coming to the campus from the city centre, a bus stop called ”Kaupungintalo P” (meaning City Hall, Northbound) is close to the hotels. The bus stop to jump off at the campus is called ”Yliopisto P” (meaning University, Northbound). When leaving from the university, the bus stop is called ”Yliopisto E” (meaning University, Southbound). In the city centre, you can hop off at ”Kaupungintalo E” (meaning City Hall, Southbound). We recommend easy contactless payment in the busses with debit or credit card (Visa, Visa Electron, Mastercard and Eurocard) or mobile (Google Pay and Apple Pay). Mobile tickets can be purchased using a Waltti app. If you pay by cash in the bus, the price is 3.3 €.

Venues in the Oulu City

Internet connection

To connect to the internet you are recommended to use the Eduroam Wi-Fi connection while inside university premises. Otherwise, you may use the PanOulu Wi-Fi connection, which works in many public places around the city of Oulu.
